3D – A Simulator that Helps Physicians Train for Medical and Surgical Procedures

At Korentec, we have extensive experience in working with medical companies that have incorporated our solutions into their end products.
In this respect, we recently completed a project with Simbionix, an Israeli company that is owned by the American company 3D. Simbionix develops groundbreaking graphic simulators that can simulate a wide range of medical procedures, from laparoscopic surgeries and catherization to ultrasound and x-ray procedures.
The graphic simulations are complemented by unique hardware components, including ‘force feedback’ elements that help create a “real world” atmosphere.
Working together with Simbionix, we developed a desktop system that enables users to create and define new simulation scenarios. The system relies on real ultrasound files and asks users to examine different parameters and define the training scenario they wish to create.
The system allows users to define virtually endless training scenarios, based on actual case studies. In the past, these tasks were performed manually and therefore rather limited.

A tight schedule: The company, which distributes the system in different countries, gave a tight deadline for the product to be ready, so that it could be presented at a conference in Europe.

Understanding the clients’ mindset:
In this project, we needed to develop a solution from scratch and provide a product that works seamlessly. Therefore, we had to understand the client’s methodologies, while adapting to its developers’ work methods and exercising maximum flexibility.

A collective effort: In order to work effectively and achieve success, and despite our development teams working from different locations, we were able to create collective work environments that helped us pool our resources and tackle various issues that required our attention. In addition, we created a platform that allowed us to share our code with the client in a simple and convenient manner. To meet our strict deadlines, we relied on Agile to break down project requirements and work in sprints.

The technologies we used were C++ and WPF C#.

The Bottom Line

Throughout this project, 3D defined professionalism, flexibility and reliability as essential elements. By implementing an efficient and quick work process, we were able to express our staff's high professional abilities and fulfill our added value as both consultants and developers.
